Assistance Needed: Identifying Event Logs Indicating MX Disconnection from ISP

Hi Meraki Community,

I'm currently troubleshooting a recent internet disconnection issue involving my Cisco Meraki MX. I reviewed the Event Log, but I'm unsure which specific events would indicate that the MX lost connectivity with the ISP.

Here are some key details:

  • I suspect there might be WAN-related logs, but I'm not sure what to look for specifically (e.g., uplink status changes, etc.).

Moreover, I noticed DHCP-related events where the switches are getting new IP leases from the DHCP server on a daily basis. I was wondering:

  1. Is it normal for switches & AP`s to receive DHCP leases daily? (The DHCP lease time is currently configured for 1-day intervals).
  2. Would it be a good idea to increase the lease time to one week, or is it better to set up a "Reserved IP range" for these devices to avoid frequent renewals?
  3. Since we work from the office 2-3 times a week, should the DHCP lease time be adjusted accordingly? (Lease times can be adjusted between hours up to a week).

Any insights or best practices regarding these two topics would be greatly appreciated!

Thank you in advance for your help!

Hi @Roey1984

- if the lease time is set to 1 day then yes the behaviour would be to see the leases expire and renew each day. Would I do this for AP’s…? No, I generally set for one week.

Would it be a good idea to increase the lease time to one week, or is it better to set up a "Reserved IP range" for these devices to avoid frequent renewals?

- As above, my preference is to set the lease time for a week. Minimises dhcp noise and keeps things fresh.

Since we work from the office 2-3 times a week, should the DHCP lease time be adjusted accordingly? (Lease times can be adjusted between hours up to a week).

- honestly think once a week is absolutely fine.

i agree with you setting static/fixed IP assignments to your switches. Keep those consistent.
