I'm trying to figure out how the remaining time the dashboard license is "converted" / distributed among device licenses in a license refresh.
For example - If I have, lets say, 400 licenses (different switches, MX's, SME, MV, and some MRs) and the co-term expiration has 1200 days left. What would happen if I refresh the dashboard with 300 1 year licenses (again different MX, switches, SME, MV and some MRs).
Afterwards, I would of course only have 300 devices I can use, but in my scenario, its somewhat of a cleanup operation due to old switches and so on currently present and being EoL.
In the above example ... I would presume (but I think Im wrong) that I would have a "pool" of 1200 (co-term days left) * 400 licenses = 480000 days. Then when refreshing with 300 1 year licenses I would get ((300 * 365) + 480000)) / 300 = 1965 days on the co-term ?
Thinking about it, if you refreshed with a 1 year license with just the devices you wished to use that would wipe out the devices that you don’t want to use going forward. So in this scenario you’d have to remove those device’s from your network to bring the Org into compliance. Would you get any time back from the devices you’re removing or are you wiping the face of those when the renewal license is applied? I’d be interested in that piece when speaking to your AM

I'm not an employee of Cisco/Meraki. My posts are based on Meraki best practice and what has worked for me in the field.
I think the documentation makes fine sense for adding licenses, but the renew part could use a little "work" with a specific example not just involving the same device type (in the example on that page its just APs).
And I agree, you could actually use the license calculator for this, its just .... ehh ... not that friendly to use, especially if you have many licenses and times to take into account .
A really nice feature request here would be to be able to use the license calculator on an already existing org (with the current licenses already put into it). - That would be awesome 🙂
