It's been a while since I did some MQTT ... when I did it, MQTT ran between the device and the MQTT broker ... over the local LAN.  It did not run over the Internet.   Have you tried entering the private IP address of your MQTT broker?   Are you using a platform running a firewall on your MQTT broker - and the firewall is blocking the traffic?   ...
