In order to add a device to a dashboard account, it must not be associated with any other dashboard account. Meraki Support cannot remove this device. If a second-hand device is still associated to its original account, the previous owner will need to be contacted to remove it.

Meraki Support cannot help in contacting previous device owners. It is the purchaser's responsibility to have the necessary contact information.

I am not a Cisco Meraki employee. My suggestions are based on documentation of Meraki best practices and day-to-day experience.

Adding to what's been said above, while it's added to someone else's Meraki network, you cannot add it to your own.

Your options are:

 - Have you friend recover their account and release the device

 - Have the service provider release the device

@Conrad13 I thought it was worth mentioning that the reason you have to claim and unclaimed devices is to stop device theft. Now it won't stop someone physically taking the hardware but it at least stop them from using it.

If your friend can un-claim the device from their Org as has been mentioned then you should be able to claim it in your however you will need to purchase a license for the access point as all devices need to be licensed to work. Meraki isn't consumer grade hardware so requires a license
