Devices being allocated 169 addresses when connecting to Wireless Network

Hi,

Can someone please advise, devices are obtaining a 169 address when trying to connect to our wireless networks. What could be causing the AP's or switch being unable to allocate a 192. address? when devices are connected to the network via a network cable in the office to the same Meraki switch (MS120-48LP) they are allocated IP addresses via DHCP without issue.

169.254 addresses are present when the client is attempting to obtain an IP address from the DHCP server. Once the DHCP server has responded to the client's request, the 192.x IP address will be adopted.

 

If wired clients are working but wireless clients are not, check the L3 firewall rules on the access point to make sure it can reach the DHCP server (wireless -> firewall & traffic shaping).
Also ensure that the client is being placed into the correct VLAN upon connection and authentication.

You can also perform a packet capture on the AP (Network -> Packet Capture) and add filters for DHCP to see if the client request is going through and whether the server response is seen coming back.

I think I might have found your network.

 

Are the APs the MR36s connected to ports 2 & 3 on your switch? If so, you have no native VLAN configured on those switch ports.

You'll need to check what VLAN you are lending out your IP addresses.
If you configure your SSID to tag the traffic with a certain VLAN, make sure you are allowing that VLAN on the switchport in it's preferably trunk configuration.
If you configure your SSID to NOT tag the traffic with a certain VLAN, make sure the native VLAN is set to the one where you are lending out your IP addresses.
