Management VLAN

Hello community,

Can someone explain to me the uses of a Management VLAN? How it works on a Meraki?

Thank you beforehand

When all management traffic is on a separate VLAN, it is much harder for unauthorized users to make changes to your network or monitor network traffic.

Similar to to iDRAC or iLO (Lights out Management) on Dell/HP servers, it's a dedicated port/VLAN to manage the device.

Hey there.

Each MS switch (except MS390) even in a stack has it's own management IP which is configured on the switch status page on the left hand side.  When you click on the pencil button you have the ability to configure DHCP or Fixed IP for management of the switch.  In there you will find a VLAN field.  If you leave that field empty, the switch will default to the management VLAN that is configured in the switch -> switch settings page.

So depending on your upstream trunk configuration you can have success or failure to get the switch online to the meraki dashboard.

This management IP has NOTHING to do with the local IP the switch has for the local status page when you connect to the out of band management port.
