Layer 3 Routing - Configuration

I am trying to do something, which may or may not be possible and I need someone smarter than me to help me figure this out.

I am trying to set this up and I am not sure how I can make this work:

All sites connected to ELAN via 10GB port on a local switch.

Site 1 IP Subnet & Equipment

  • 192.168.1.0/22
    • Gateway is 192.168.1.1
  • MX450
  • Catalyst 9300 Switch (In Meraki Mode)

Site 2 IP Subnet & Equipment

  • 192.168.20.0/24
    • Gateway is 192.168.20.1
  • MX67
  • Catalyst 9300 Switch (In Meraki Mode)

We want to create a L3 route at each site to ‘find’ the other network.  Site 2 contains our DR Nodes, so the two sites need to communicate in order to be able to replicate between the sites.

Also, we want to route internet traffic from Sites 4 and 4 through Site 1 unless Site 1 is unreachable, then we want the traffic to route via Site 2.

Making the sites find each other is easy and at the simplest level you could just use static routes and perhaps mix in OSPF if there are capable switches at all 4 sites. However Meraki does not support backup routes on switches.  Not even on the 9300s where the base IOS could do them.

A few possible solutions:

1) If you have 9300s at Sites 3 and 4 you could possible convert them to IOS mode and then you'd be able to use SLAs. I'd call this the cheapest scenario as you don't need other equipment. Learning curve could have some time cost.

2) You could put a router at sites 3 and 4 that can do SLAs between your switches and the circuit.
3) Get your ELAN provider to switch to DIA circuits and get MXs for Sites 3 and 4. I'd call this the ideal scenario if your goal is to have everything Meraki

There are lots of smaller pieces to all of these scenarios which you may want to engage your partner on if they aren't just a reseller.

Hopefully this at least helps you get on the right direction.
