Newbie Question on IOT sensors

I'm assuming that all of the IOT sensors meraki is supporting,  is designed to work and add value based on only buying meraki sensors,, ? I assume that we can not add our our tec to the portal and get same functionality or benfits..

Pretty much just a user of cameras and wifi tech.. so kind of new to iot world.

Most new hvac gear has a eth port, but Im assuming we can just plug any meraki temp sensor to this and get same functionally as the native mode that a hvac system has already built into their gear.

If you're talking about registering and managing these devices through the Meraki Dashboard, that's exactly what you're talking about.

You can't add third-party devices.

I am not a Cisco Meraki employee. My suggestions are based on documentation of Meraki best practices and day-to-day experience.

yeah,, thats roughly the idea.. , so how does a temperature sensor work, just tells about getting it warm, does actually control the gear?

sorry meant the sensor, only alerts you about conditions that you want to monitor, it isnt designed to alter the condition and tell a/c to kick on for exampl ? Its true that  most hvac gear has some interface to control ..  I am guessing most dont buld a n monttor option,, is that the space some of these sensors are trying to fill that gap

I believe it is worth reading some materials.

Correct.

You can plug in a Meraki temperature sensor, but this would be 100% independent of the HVAC, and would be for monitoring only.  While the sensor in the HVAC would likely also control its operation.

Meraki sensors with the exception of the MT40 are just sensors and not controllers, you can push their data our via MQTT which you can then use to do wonderful things but those wonderful things require non Meraki hardware.
