What ports in whatsapp need to be open in order for the app to function properly? In addition what urls need to be white-listed as well?

As for URLs I didn't find anything right away, but I would suggest doing a packet capture to see what it is attempting to talk to.
This was helpful and resolved the issues I was having with whatsapp on our network.
