Only Allow specific "streaming Media" URLs

We are currently trialing MX policies for one of the local schools. One of main the requirement is that we should be able to only allow specific (https) streaming media url while blocking the rest of the streaming media category. For example specific urls on Youtube/Vimeo etc. I have played around with policies, allow/block lists etc but didnt have much luck.

Anyone who may have encountered the similar requirement please share your experience.

Getting noticed

In one of my group policies, I have blocked "shopping" in the "Blocked website categories" section. However there are some shopping sites that we use for business that must be accessible. So far I have added two sites to the "Allow list URL patterns" section and it works perfectly. General shopping is still blocked, but the sites that I allowed work without issue.

Note: When applying these rules and testing it is important to note that any rule changes takes a minute or two to become active. At first I thought the changes that I made did not work, but a short while later it started working.

Hope this is applicable to your situation.

Like PhilipDAth mentioned, you won’t be able to allow specific URLs when dealing with https since it’s encrypted. The whole domain will have to be allowed.

We block the streaming media category but allow YouTube usage. There are specific URLs that you need to allow other than youtube.com for YouTube to work. An example of this is ytimg.com, categorized as streaming media. Check the developer options in your browser to see what other sources YouTube requires or check the Meraki event logs to see what other URLs are being blocked on your test client.

Kind of a big deal

You won't be able to block specific videos on YouTube.  You can either allow all or allow none.  The special exception is if you use the "YouTube for Schools" option, which lets you set restrictions to "moderate" or "strict".
