MX450 Bandwidth Performance Issue – Capped at ~500 Mbps Download / 700 Mbps Upload

Hi everyone,

I'm currently experiencing bandwidth performance issues with a Cisco Meraki MX450 on the AutoVPN.

The device is deployed in HUB mode and connected to a 1 Gbps symmetric line. However, during testing, I'm seeing performance capped at around 500 Mbps for download and 700 Mbps for upload, which is far below what this model should be capable of handling.

Here are a few details about the setup:

  • Model: MX450

  • Firmware version: MX 19.1.8.1

  • Speed tests were conducted directly at the gateway, with IPERF
  • No traffic shaping rules, bandwidth limits, or firewall rules that could be impacting throughput

  • CPU usage on the MX remains low during tests

Has anyone experienced similar issues with the MX450?

Is there anything I might be overlooking—QoS, advanced settings, firmware-related bugs?

Any help or suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

have you considered upgrading to either MX 19.1.9 or MX 19.2.2?

MX19.1.9

  • This is the latest generally available maintenance release for the MX 19.1 release. It contains a key fix for MX75 interfaces becoming unresponsive. There are also fixes for passthrough mode, AutoVPN, and various issues encountered on MX75, MX85, MX95, MX105, MX250, and MX450 appliances.

MX19.2.2

  • There are a significant amount of fixes related to routing, VPN, and connectivity issues, including enhancements for BGP, IPsec, AutoVPN, and stability improvements for some models. Please read through the full details below.

If you haven't done so already, you may consider going to Firmware Upgrades Feed and SUBSCRIBE so any new firmware release announcement/notifications arrive to your e-mail inbox.  This is quite handy to stay informed (if interested).

How are you testing this ? Your MX450 is configured as a HUB , are you connecting directly on the lan ports ? via a Spoke ?

Try doing multiple TCP streams to saturate the link.  One server and one client may not be enough.

Another user posted recently about slow performance using an MX450 (or possibly MX250) in a hub-spoke topology.

Run a quick search - was in the last couple of weeks.  User is working with TAC
