MG51E cellular gateway and MX68W - passthrough mode issue

Hi All

I have a Meraki MG51E cellular gateway and an MX68W.

I have got the MX68 to register in the cloud using routed mode, however when I put the MG51 into passthrough mode, the MX appliance doesnt appear to connect.

I have port 11 on the MX providing PoE to the MG51 port 1, and WAN 1 on the MX plugged into port 2 on the MG51.

I believe the MG will provide its WAN IP via DHCP to the MX appliance.

Why isnt it working? any ideas?

This should work. Port #11 on the MX68 will provide PoE to the MG51 on Port #1 and Port #2 would be connected to the MX68 Port #1 to provide the internet access. The MX68 Port #1 should be set to DHCP and the MG51 should pass through the IP address that the cellular provider sent to the MG51. The documentation states that when you turn on passthrough on the MG51 it could take a few minutes for it to come up correctly. I recently switched an MG51E to passthrough mode and connected Port #2 on it to a WAN port on an MX85 configured for DHCP and it worked as expected. I used a PoE injector between the MG51E and the MX85, so only one ethernet cable was needed. The MG51 does have to be running 3.x firmware for the passthrough mode to be available for use.

Hi @carlto ,

Your configuration is correct. This sounds to me like a carrier specific quirk.

Please connect a laptop set with DHCP to the passthrough mode MG. We need to verify if laptops gets an IP address and if you can access let's say meraki.com.

  • If you can, we might have an issue between MX and MG and meraki support should be contacted.
  • If you can not surf, I would recommend reaching out to the carrier.

I hope it helps!
