IPoE support on MX Series

Hi,
Does the MX series support IPoE feature?
According to the topic in this community, it does not support at least as of Mar 2022, but I would like to clarify the current status including the roadmap.

Hello,

I think not yet IPoE support on MX. and I am not sure future roadmap. also,Even if you contact support, I don't think you'll be able to find a roadmap for this.

Hi,

IPoE is usually used by ISPs to describe delivering IP connectivity over Ethernet without additional encapsulation (PPPoE). Therefore it's effectively standard of IPv4/IPv6 communication with DHCP used for address assignment.

Setting the MX's WAN to Direct and Auto should just work in most cases.

Thank you, Adam! I understand that the MX does not officially support IPoE but it should work in most cases.

Hi,

I couldn’t find any official confirmation of IPoE support, but it seems to be a term that ISPs use differently so, in my opinion, it's a bit misleading to focus on that.

In the case of "Japanese IPoE," which seems to be the topic here, it’s most likely about DS-Lite (Dual-Stack Lite) which is widely adopted in Japan. It is a method for transitioning networks to IPv6 while still supporting IPv4. Router needs to encapsulate IPv4 packets inside IPv6 packets and send them through an IPv6 tunnel. Since this process requires specific support for DS-Lite, you’d need an ISP-provided router to make it work.

Hi Adam,
Thank you again! Yes, as you guessed, my question is about support for "Japanese IPoE (mostly DS-Lite)".
As I said above in Japanese, I understand that it is necessary to add an IPoE router that supports IPv4 over IPv6 tunneling between ISP and MX's WAN Interface.

日本独自のIPoE(DS-Lite等)については未対応と聞いており、

手元のMXでも設定・DHCPでIP取得することはできませんでした。

ありがとうございます!日本独自のIPoEは動作しないということで承知しました。

MXとキャリア網の間にIPoE対応ルータを挟むなどのWorkaroundを検討します。
