iOS App Notifications - Model vs Banner?

In the Profiles > Notifications section, if one adds an app to this list, the options under "Alert type" are None, Banner, and Modal alert. I'm trying to figure out how exactly that translates to an iPhone, as there's no Modal option within any of the notifications on an iPhone itself.

The notifications on iOS are available in the detailed settings on the iPhone. This is an article that explains iOS Notifications in general.
