Admin security in a changing landscape

Previously, we've enabled customers to limit management plane access (that is, dashboard and dashboard API) to specific IP ranges, offering additional peace of mind to customers with consistent usage patterns.

This setting has always applied to both GUI and API access, but many of today's admins need to log in from mobile phones, guest WiFi services and from home offices, most of which have dynamically assigned IPs and are thus hard to predict. In fact, many customers have no strategic need to limit GUI access to any specific IP ranges.

However, this is usually different than customer- and partner-developed applications built on dashboard API, which are more likely to operate from a much smaller, more consistent range of IP addresses. Further, as the popularity of our marketplace partner applications explodes, there are cases where a customer might want to provide a partner with API access, but limit all API usage to pre-approved source IP addresses.

Enter API-specific client IP limits

Today, I'm pleased to announce the general availability of a new, API-specific feature for customers with such requirements. This new feature allows organization admins to prescribe a limited set of IP ranges from which dashboard API applications can authenticate, without imposing any limits to GUI access. In other words, if you know that your approved API applications always operate from a handful of IP ranges or addresses, you can tell us what those ranges are, and then we'll reject any attempted API access from outside of those allowed ranges.

This can be especially useful if you use services like Apigee to proxy your API traffic, and wish to disallow any API access to applications aside from your API proxy.

Get started

You can configure this feature via Dashboard or via Dashboard API.

Via Dashboard: Organization > Settings > Login IP ranges > "Limit Dashboard API access to these IP ranges"

Via Dashboard API: PUT /organizations/{organizationId}/loginSecurity

JohnK_0-1646081937589.png

However you choose to configure this feature, you will find that the formatting is the same as the existing, unchanged feature that limits both GUI and API access, making it easy to add this extra layer of security to your organizations.

As always, exercise due diligence before enabling any new security restriction. You can unwittingly lock out important API applications (e.g. those provided by ecosystem partners or service providers) from your organization if you do not include their IP ranges before enabling this feature.

Today, we’re announcing brand new enhancements to the Meraki Marketplace (https://apps.meraki.io), the exclusive catalog of applications developed by ecosystem partners, developed on top of the Meraki platform.

Meraki Marketplace.jpg

The Marketplace features apps that are specifically designed for Meraki customers, sales and partners to view, demo and deploy. The site enhancements allow your customers to view apps categorized by outcomes and experiences such as hybrid work.

Visit the Meraki Marketplace at https://apps.meraki.io/ or access Meraki Marketplace directly from the Meraki Dashboard and see what apps on the Marketplace can do for you.

Tell us what you like about the changes. More importantly what are the changes or additions you would like to see. Comment below!

Ever wish you could go faster?

Well, now you can! We are thrilled to share that we've doubled the API call budget to 10 calls per second per organization (from five) for meraki.com customers at no additional cost.

Who's impacted?

All Meraki customers who use the dashboard API.

What's the impact?

If you were encountering API responses with HTTP code 429, which required you to wait and resubmit the request, then you will see fewer 429 responses with your existing API usage. If you were not encountering 429s, then you will not see any difference, but you are less likely to encounter 429s overall if you increase your API usage, such as adopting an app from our Meraki Marketplace.

When's this happening? What do I have to do?

No change is required on your end; this is already rolled out and available immediately! Did I mention it's free? Just one more benefit of your existing Meraki licensing.

What's next?

We're excited to hear how this change improves the developer experience, so please let us know in the comments!

Thank you for choosing Meraki. 🤠🚀

Hi everyone!

Last month we ran our first-ever, Virtual Hackathon as a forum for partners to proactively address COVID-19 related scenarios with creative solutions, built with Meraki API services.

We were so excited by the variety of solutions submitted - thank you to all that participated for your rapid development, ingenuity, and positivity!

We hope others will be inspired by these solutions to start investigating what's available through our Marketplace of turnkey, pre-built solutions - or look into building their own automations, workflows, or new applications with our open and extensible API services. (We have a variety of open source projects to help you get started!)

With that, congratulations to the winners of this Hackathon!! We recognized the teams below across six unique categories:

Over Hackathon Winner: Quick Pick-up from NTT

This solution enabled contactless order pick up for restaurant patrons. Using the Meraki MV API, the team built a dashboard that shows snapshots of vehicles in parking spaces and easily allows restaurant admins to assign orders to appropriate drivers. The solution also integrates with Webex Teams to provide notifications when parking spots are occupied, drivers are waiting, and when those spaces are then vacated (order was completed).

Public Vote Winner: Filter Point from Impact

In the era of COVID-19, Impact has rolled out more Umbrella+Meraki networks than ever before to keep clients safe while working on their home networks (outside of the office firewall). Their submission to this hackathon was focused on answering the simple question, “Can I push our existing Cisco Meraki configuration (for blacklists, whitelists, filtered categories) to Cisco Umbrella?”

Using the Meraki API and Umbrella API, the team at Impact developed a solution to sync configurations between different Meraki networks in one organization, between different Meraki organizations, and between Meraki and Umbrella organizations.

Retail/Hospitality: RAPID (Retail Android Pandemic Incident Disrupter) from NTT

COVID-19 has changed the retail space drastically, prompting the need to ensure the safety of employees and customers by tracking occupancy. A second team at NTT built this solution to allow clients to keep an accurate count of people entering and exiting their store/location and feed that information into a web UI. This UI shows the store’s capacity, current count of people, and customers waiting in line for service.

The solution also ties in with Webex Teams to notify employees as they approach, meet, or exceed capacity. On top of that, the team also developed a feature to allow customers to scan a QR code to put themselves into a queue if they prefer not to wait outside in a line.

Manufacturing/Healthcare: Citizen Care Pod from Insight

The team at Insight focused on a problem that impacts every industry - how to safely reopen businesses. Their solution addresses what they see as the first step to reopening: providing screening and detection solutions for staff and guests. To meet this need, the team focused on hacking a solution for their Citizen Care Pods, which are portable virus testing centers to aid in detection and screening wherever you have a large group of people (ie: construction sites, retail, or entertainment venues).

The Citizen Care Pod is outfitted with a variety of Cisco Meraki technologies, including MV Cameras for people counting, networking gear to stay connected, and Webex Teams for private conversations about results. All of this technology is tracked through the Insight Connected Platform for easy management of the pod. Through this solution, admins can receive alerts if people are gathering at pod locations and easily communicate with onsite and relevant stakeholders to address the situation.

Operations: NORRIS from WWT

Malware and ransomware are becoming all too common. Left unchecked, these threats can devastate corporate networks. The team at WWT built this solution to easily integrate Cisco Stealthwatch for Meraki networks. This integration allows admins to identify where clients are, how badly they are infected, and quickly isolate them with Meraki MX or MR firewall rules. This powerful, “single button quarantine” of malicious clients automates the changing of VLANS and firewall rules to isolate infected devices from the rest of the network until a technician can be dispatched to resolve the situation.

Define your own Challenge: Automated Network Deployment & Support Healthcare App from CAE Technology...

Deploying sites rapidly and securely is a challenge for healthcare organizations. To address this, the team at CAE used the Meraki Dashboard API to create a single step deployment tool to set up an entire suite of Meraki solutions.

To kick off a Meraki deployment, the admin simply enters the hospital ID number and serial numbers of the Meraki devices into the app. From there, all of the configuration is completed automatically, including configuration of hostnames, network tags, IP schemas, VLAN assignment, switchport assignment, and more. This will save hours of configuration time and money!

Furthermore, this application integrates into the Webex Teams API to automatically create a new Space for the new Meraki network and adds in the on-demand CAE NOC (Network Operations Centre) support group. This will get new healthcare sites set up, running, and supported quicker than ever.

Congratulations to all of the winners above, and thank you to all participants for being a part of this special event. We can’t wait to see what our community comes up with next!
