License renewal

License renewal

We just purchased a renewal for the MX and MR devices as they are about to expire. However the new key invalidates the license we added after the original.

Our original purchase in 2017 was a 3 year license for a MX and MR devices.

A year after we purchased an additional license for an MR and the dashboard shows  3 years claimed in Nov 2017.

A call to support suggested that's the way it works and we need to purchase another license.

Why would I need to update a license that doesn't expire until 2020?

Are we forfeiting a year on the additional MR?

I read the online docs at https://documentation.meraki.com/zGeneral_Administration/Licensing/Meraki_Licensing_-_License_More_D...)
however they are less than clear.

I assume you still only have 1 physical MX and 1 MR. The additional MR license you applied to the org would have increased the MR device count to 2. You only have one MR, but the additional license doesn't actually extend the license duration for that device because the co-termination model assumes 2 MR's.

You would need to work with Meraki support or your account manager to rectify this if you want to use some of the value in the 2nd license.

Kind of a big deal

Meraki uses a single co-terminated date.  When you make later purchases that single date is extended.  You can read about it here:

https://documentation.meraki.com/zGeneral_Administration/Licensing/Cisco_Meraki_Licensing_Guidelines...

This makes renewals particularly simple, as everything needs to be renewed at the same time.
