Alerts for excessive usage

Hi All

I am relatively new to the Meraki dashboard but value the reports we currently receive highlighting top client usage among others. In recent weeks we have observed users pulling down 100GB of data in a day to an iPhone over the office guest WiFi. Similarly a user uploading nearly 100GB of data to YouTube "during breaks". This at a time when my team is working hard to ensure network stability at the most critical time of year for our business.

Is there any functionality within the dashboard to create alerts when anything we would consider excessive happens? For example, if a client uploads / downloads say 10GB in a day, can we be notified immediately via email?

We need to get closer to this as a team and the once per week emails are useful but I know we can do better. We will also be looking at sensible group policies in the portal to prevent excessive usage in the coming weeks.

You can set parameters for wifi devices as seen below (if it helps).

In your Meraki Dashboard, go to Network-wide > Configure > Alerts.

Find "Clients having high bandwidth usage":
Look for this specific alert type within the list.

Configure the Alert:

  • Enable the alert.

  • Select the SSID: You can configure this alert for a specific SSID (like your "Guest WiFi") or for all SSIDs. This is crucial for isolating guest network usage.

  • Choose a usage threshold: Meraki offers predefined thresholds:

    • Low: 25GB

    • Medium: 50GB

    • High: 75GB

  • Define the time window: You can set the time window over which this usage is measured:

    • 30 minutes

    • 2 hours

    • 6 hours

    • 12 hours

  • Select recipients: Choose the email addresses that should receive these alerts.

I don't know if you also have an MX, but here are all the alerts you can send.

You can also customize some of these using APIs.

I am not a Cisco Meraki employee. My suggestions are based on documentation of Meraki best practices and day-to-day experience.
