Advice - How do you use the Device Address Field?

Hey,

Looking at the address field that appears underneath devices in the Meraki Dashboard (see screenshots).

I was wondering if people here, would mind sharing how they use the field? Also does Meraki have any specific documentation about it.

We are doing an audit and want to use it more effectively. So just seeing what other people are doing, how are you using it? How can you use it? Can you add whatever you want? We have tested adding Building/Level/Room information followed by the proper address - this seems to work.

Enter a Street Address or GPS Coordinates

The street address or GPS coordinates of each type of Meraki device can be configured manually in the address field. Any form of address recognized by Google Maps is acceptable in this field. To change the address of the device:

  1. In dashboard, navigate to the network containing the device.
  2. Navigate to the Monitor page listing all devices in the network.
    • MG - Navigate to Cellular Gateway > Monitor > Cellular gateways
    • MR - Navigate to Wireless > Monitor > Access points.
    • MS - Navigate to Switching > Monitor > Switches.
    • MX - Navigate to Security & SD-WAN > Monitor > Appliances status
    • MV - Navigate to Cameras > Monitor > Cameras.
    • Z-Series - Navigate to Teleworker gateway > Monitor > Appliances status
  3. Select the Name of the device you wish to modify (this will not be necessary for MX security appliances or Z-Series teleworker gateways)
  4. For the MV only, navigate to the Network tab
  5. Select the Edit (pencil icon) option next to the Address section
  6. In the Address field that appears, enter the street address or GPS coordinates
  7. Click Save

You can also upload custom floor plans also described in the same documentation.

The notes section can also be a handy place to reference a devices specific location:

Rack 12

1U located in slot 40

I just use the actual adress.

But I always use florrplans and place the devices where they are. Also Tags are usefull for me.

Adress itself is just important, for me, to see the organization overview, als is green on the map (especially for the cio)

We name our devices according to their position.  Eg : AP + Site Loc Name + FL + SEQ number.  That way every name is unique and you know which floor it is installed and you don't end up with 20 AP named " AP-CONFERENCE-ROOM"

We use the Google map APIs to normalize the adress , that way the device is always placed correctly on the map.

If you go Organisation/Overview you can see a map of all your devics, which ones are alerting, and which ones are down.

This allows you to quickly see if an outage is related to a geographic region or is widespread.
