issue with multicast traffic in a mixed Cisco Meraki and Catalyst environment

Hi all,

I'm experiencing an issue with multicast traffic in a mixed Cisco Meraki and Catalyst environment.

Setup:

  • SW01: Catalyst 9300-24S (configured as IGMP Querier, receives multicast TV channels via SFP uplink)

  • SW02: Meraki MS130-48P (spanning tree priority set to 4096)

  • The rest of all other switches are Meraki MS130 switches (with default spanning tree priority)

  • All switches are with IGMP enabled and do not flood unknown multicast. (nothing new to setups I've done many times elsewhere).

SW01 is the designated IGMP Querier and also the spanning tree root (priority 0). After a power outage, once all switches come back online, multicast traffic fails to flow across the network. However, rebooting SW02 (MS130-48P) restores multicast functionality.

I suspect this is due to SW01 (Catalyst) taking longer to boot than the Meraki switches, causing the MS130s to come online before the Querier is active. This may lead to IGMP snooping tables not populating correctly.

Questions:

  1. Has anyone encountered similar multicast issues after power events in mixed Catalyst/Meraki environments?

  2. Why it happens?
  3. Do MS130 switches (not L3) can really operate as a Querier though they are not L3?
  4. Would enabling IGMP Querier on SW02 as a backup help mitigate this?

  5. Are there best practices for ensuring multicast stability during boot sequences?

Any insights or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance!

Captain.
