HA Supported MS Models

Hi All,

Hope you all are doing well.

I have one query, Can we configure Meraki MS390 in HA mode.

Actually I am going to replace my CAt6500 with Meraki MS, What would be the right Replacement.

Thanks in advance.

MS390's don't support warm spare capabilities (VRRP)

https://documentation.meraki.com/MS/Layer_3_Switching/MS_Warm_Spare_(VRRP)_Overview

However you could stack your MS390's if you're looking for redundancy.

HI @Sajid .

The MS390 doesn't have a good reputation (search Google).  I'm guessing if you are replacing a Catalyst 6500 you want this to be your network core.  I would not risk doing this with an MS390.  The MS390 is the only lemon in the pack.  All the other switches are good.

I would go to this page:

https://meraki.cisco.com/products/switches/models/

Scroll down one page, tick the boxes for everything you want in a replacement switch, and see what the tool recommends.

The MS355 is pretty similar to an MS390:

I wonder what you mean by HA.

One disappointment was to learn that you can't do firmware upgrades on the switches without a downtime.

Example:

  • you have 2 core switches (MS425) stacked
  • you have a bunch of access switches, all of them connected to both core switches, LACP set up and so on
  • each core switch has an uplink to the firewall/router etc.

You would expect that you can do a firmware upgrade where only one of the core switches would reboot at a time, thus leaving the whole network operational, but no, this is not supported - you can try to force that using staging, but this is not a supported scenario and the Meraki Support doesn't know how this will behave (I tested that and got mixed results). Obviously rebooting access switches and loosing the clients behind them for a while is expected.

In classic cisco world the missing feature is called Rolling Stack Upgrade.
