Sadly no, there isn't one AP per class room. The system was designed before I came aboard. There's 24 in the entire school building. Is 1:1 the best rule for coverage? Looks like the nearest APs to the problem area are two in particular. One AP has about 10ms latency, the other one has almost 150ms latency. As far as the teacher receiving email when the classroom is empty, I will have to check with her further on that question. I would love to try turning off 2.4ghz, I just don't want to boot anyone off who needs it. I'm pretty sure all the devices are now 5ghz compatible now, between Teachers' laptops and Students' Chromebooks.

Hi everyone. We are a small school district that has a fairly small/simple Meraki network spanning 5 school buildings. We're having trouble with wireless performance in a couple of buildings, one of which is our main Elementary school. Two classrooms right next to each other on the second floor get bad performance, the teachers' laptop won't receive district emails until she brings it home after school, she has trouble connecting to her chromecast, and kids sometimes lose connection as well. We have the possibility of adding another couple of MRs, but my question is, will we need to run an ethernet connection through the drop ceiling to the nearest switch? The model is MR52. Thanks.

We have no more budget for the year, so we won't be hiring a consultancy. I have mastery of plenty of technology, just not networking yet, but that's going to change soon. Thanks for your help.

Interesting! What makes a non-routable VLAN? And once I make an mgmt VLAN, do I need to set any ports/switches to use it? Or is it automatic. Thanks.

Thanks! Will I have to add the management vlan to trunk ports on all my switches, or just specific ones? And last question, creating a vlan for management on my MX with the same number I set my management vlan in config is still necessary, correct?

Hi everyone. In a few weeks I am going to be implementing some changes on our small school system's Meraki network. We have 5 school facilities networked together with Meraki switches and an MX at both our High School and Middle school. For starters, I am going to get Middle School vlan traffic off vlan 1 and make it a separate vlan, and then change the native vlan on all the switches at that school to match. Is it best practice to change management vlan to something besides 1 as well? If so, do I then need to go elsewhere in the Meraki dash and change other things? Lastly, do I need to create a separate "Management" vlan to tag on switches and access points? Thank you.

Our ISP just upgraded us from 1Gbps to 10Gbps, and I was wanting to make sure our other schools were getting the full 10Gbps if possible. The switches we're using are MS225s. I don't know if those support aggregation.

It's okay. Any problems you can see based on the photos? Should I look into adding another fiber strand to the Elementary School and High School? And is it still worth seeing if I can upgrade the fiber cables going to the MS250s in other locations? Thank you.

Here is our main MX and first 48-port switch. I noticed that the Elementary School and High School are only getting one strand of fiber. MX 48-port switch

I was talking about the MX250s. I can see what kind of switches we have, but I think they're only MS75 at best, some are a smaller number as well. Can I at least see about changing our Fiber cables over to 10Gbps on the device our fiber internet comes in on?

We use a couple of Meraki MX250 switches at the small school district I work in. Recently our ISP bumped us from 1Gbps to 10Gbps, and I was wondering if we can use our MX250s to aggregate Fiber connections between our schools to 20gbps. Does the MX250 support that, or can I just do 10Gbps? Thanks.

We do use AzureAD. I would love to pursue that, but my director is telling me that not all Teacher laptops have been Azure joined, and the Teachers currently have them out in the wild. So asking/wanting all Teachers to come in for us to get our hands on those laptops would be extremely difficult.

They are! But most teachers have their laptops with them and trying to get them to come in to us before the school year starts would be pretty much impossible. We would have to get hands on all those devices, correct? Thanks.

Hi! I work at a small school system in the IT department and since it's summer, we're trying to re-tool some processes that there have been issues with. We use a Meraki network that connects all of our school locations, and among others, we have a student wi-fi and a teacher wi-fi connection. The teachers have been prone to writing their wi-fi connection password down on whiteboards and leaving it where students are getting access to it. Some admins are asking us to find a way to integrate the password/credentials right into the SSID. I was thinking of a rough idea where we could set the teacher SSID up with a splash page requiring a one-time login with their credentials, but I think I would need to know ALL their credentials in advance, which might be tricky. Can anyone recommend an alternate method that would work with a (hopeful) minimum of fuss? Thanks in advance.

I'm going to shoot for creating a new VLAN and making it Management. Just so I'm clear, I'm not doing this on an individual switch, but through switch settings under the dashboard, correct? Then I have to reboot the switch for the changes to take effect, and in this case it's the MX250 that controls everything here at the Middle School. And as far as I'm aware, I don't have to change any IP addresses or Trunk port VLANs, but correct me if I'm wrong. Thanks!

Yes, as far as I can tell, the Middle School LAN is a single IP with a /22 on it. There's only 76 clients right now but kids are gone for the summer. Lots to think about in your second to last paragraph, and I've been getting ideas together in the last few days, but I'm far from proficient in all this. When you say "If the volume is that high" what would you call high? I need to find out how many devices will be online during the school year since I just started last week and am still not sure of the scale we're dealing with. I know it's nowhere near 1000, but it might be around 150 in this particular school. Why/what benefit is there to have Guests only send and receive to their default gateway? Thanks!

Thanks! I will look into moving student traffic to a separate VLAN. Also, would you recommend moving the Middle School off VLAN 1 or changing the management VLAN to something else? Whichever method, what do I need to take into consideration first and what pitfalls should I look out for? Thanks again.

Thank you! Right now we have a Teacher SSID, a Student SSID, two for guests and one for Visitors. It's our plan to shut off the ones for guests and visitors soon. I will look into getting student traffic on it's own VLAN.

Thank you! Lots for me to consider. I am essentially a Networking amateur so I will likely have follow up questions. I'll start with two for right now. 1) It looks at the top level (here at our Middle School location) that our entire High School campus is on a single VLAN. Should I look into parting that out into additional ones, and having more VLANS might smooth out network usage there? 2) Do you recommend that I get our Middle School off VLAN 1 and onto another one during the summer while the stakes are low? Thank you very much, sorry for the ignorance of my questions, I'm really trying to cram knowledge to make up for my lack on Networking.

Hi everybody. I recently started working at a small local school system in the IT department. My background is in hardware and software deployment and troubleshooting, but I'm really looking to expand into Networking in a big way. Our system is comprised of 5 school campuses in a small area, with one being the furthest away in a nearby rural township. I've been poring over the Meraki dashboard for the last few days and watching some overview/deep dive videos on Meraki. I am gaining some knowledge through that, but I'd really like to ask some specific questions to get guidance on. Here are some observations so far, and I'd love to hear people's thoughts on these. 1) It looks like our Middle School facility is on VLAN 1. I have been doing some research where people are saying not to use VLAN 1. Another management VLAN can be designated, but I didn't know if it was as simple as that with no 'side effects'. 2) Should all Wi-Fi devices be on their own VLAN for optimizing traffic? It was a suggestion I read elsewhere, I just want to sound it out and reason on it. 3) Would tagging or subnets be useful for a small school system? I am seeing that not much is tagged, and I think there are very few subnets here as well. Is a subnet indicated by an IP address ending with a /28 or a similar value? Thank you very much for your guidance and help.

I'll see what I can gather. Right now school is out for summer, so there's hardly any network usage currently.
