I just read this most excellent article https://www.networkcomputing.com/wireless-infrastructure/4-wifi-band-steering-myths And the part about there needing to be more abundant 5ghz APs for it to work right plus the fact that i am in a very non congested area (wide open country no other SSIDs for miles) makes 2.4ghz connections very appealing. And I have often looked at my devices in certain conditions where 2.4 was for sure available and the devices were struggling to get a 5ghz link and thought “huh? That’s not right”. read this article - https://documentation.meraki.com/MR/Radio_Settings/Band_Steering_Overview The part where it talks about regardless of whether the 5 GHz signal is very weak and perhaps the 2.4 GHz signal is very strong it will still prefer the 5 sounds like a problem I encounter here on a regular basis where there are hills and trees and all kinds of stuff in the way of a lot of 5ghz traffic and I’m yelling at it to just grab the 2.4 and get on with it. My sense is dual band without band steering is probably the right set up for me. Any thoughts or guidance?

You likely won't get all the way inside buildings with the MR84 on the room. I have just such a setup and I have needed to add internal APs to get consistent bandwidth away from the front of the building. The first 10 feet or so is OK but the rear areas are not as good. Mine is about 25 feet off the ground w dual omnis. Heres a pic of the front of the building. Not sure why its sideways...

@PhilipDAth would a MR74 exhibit no issue with different antenna types as the radios aren't linked? My experience climbing on top of buildings with MR74s that have omni 2.4s and directional 5ghz and replacing the directional with omni to make 4 omnis is literally everything works better at closer range - both 2.4 and 5.

At my retreat Center I have two SSIDs one is for residence which I leave is unrestricted because people behave and I have one for guests which is behind a splash page with terms and conditions. My line is 100 Mb up and down symmetrical and I want guests to only be able to use up to 50 Mb of that. I’ve looked through the settings and it seems this is more per user then per SSID. Thoughts?

If I set the repeaters and gateways to the same channel on both bands that I want to be meshed together is that harmful? It seems like out here in this very clean radio environment either would do? @PhilipDAth are you a proponent of fixed channels or auto if i live out in the country?

Hello! I have 2 gateways about 40 feet from each other and 5 repeaters scattered around them. My RF environment is completely clean - I am way out in the country. I want clients to be able to roam between the various APs as usual. I want to be able to tell the hardware which repeaters to use with which APs. I believe I can do this with manual channel assignments. My questions: 1. Do both the 5ghz and 2.4ghz channels have to be the same on each set of gateways and repeaters? So for instance Set 1 - Manually set to Ch 11 and Ch 46 Gateway 1: same Repeater 1: same Repeater 2: same Set 2 - Manually set to Ch 4 and Ch 36 Gateway 2: same Repeater 3: same Repeater 4: same And will clients be able to seamlessly move between both gateways and all 4 repeaters without issue?

Thanks @Raj66 Why would this newly transplanted MR52 set on repeater mode which is now a Gateway have so much trouble seeing current mesh neighbors? Does it take time to find them? Automatic should allow that discovery on boot, no?

Yep it just pulls it’s config and associated history of mesh neighbors again, thinking its a thousand plus feet away on those channels while ignoring the MR84 on its channels right next to it. I tried something this morning which is unplugging it from the switch where it was getting its PoE+ connection and plugging it into an injector which has forced it to look for a new gateway in repeater mode. It *did* finally find the MR84 and auto switched to the right channels. Current mesh route is now correct. Also of note- this particular AP, when it changes channels, seems to cue all the other old APs on the other side of the property that I guarantee cannot see each other wirelessly, to change channels with it as if they are close by and are adaptively doing so to maintain their mesh. So weird. Question - should the AP it shows in mesh route as the gateway also appear in mesh neighbors? I look in the mesh neighbors page for APs close by and they do show this new transplanted one but it still refuses to show them! Question 2 - to force a mesh via manual channel changes do both channels have to match on the respective APs? Is that advised?

Hello! I took an MR52 from another part of the property and plopped it down near a MR84. It doesn't see the 84 at all in its RF profile or mesh neighbors and I can't for the life of me figure out how to make it drop its entire config memory of all the networks around it and just start over from scratch. Luckily it does understand that its now a gateway not a repeater but it shows its mesh gateway as another one across the property which is obviously wrong as it should be "self". When I get close enough to it that its signal is better than the MR84, it works great, but its not quite playing nicely with the other AP. I have removed the device from the network, readded it, unclaimed it, reclaimed it. It won't start over. It just picks its configuration back up right where it left off completely confused about where it is and what's around it. I forced it over to the same channels as the MR84 and that seems to have worked, but Id rather just have it autodiscover. Any thoughts?

Awesome. I mean the good news is that my config is not complex. I don't do any VLAN or anything special. I just have 2 networks - main and guest with their passwords and corresponding content filtering selections. Is all that stored at Meraki and would be downloaded if a new MX devices were added? I guess what I am wondering is *what* exactly would need to be reconfigured.

Edit -Whoops changed to MX from MR. Hello! A friend is giving me a MX84 from his business (he upgraded). Its unclaimed and ready to go. I saw in the warm spare docs the HW has to be the same. This won't be the case and I only have one MX license. I see this doc - https://documentation.meraki.com/MX/Other_Topics/MX_Cold_Swap_Replacing_an_Existing_MX_with_a_Different_MX And Id like to do this with as little reconfiguration as possible. Any veterans out there who can tell me the *actual* way to do this, get my config copied over (im just doing this for the higher user count) without having to buy another MX license?

MA-ANT-21 in operation on the bottom R connectors on 5 MR74s all over my property which seem to be doing ok. Why would you need to use the dual band variant on a single band radio?

One other thing to draw your attention to is this thread: https://community.meraki.com/t5/Wireless-LAN/802-3af-v-802-3at-Is-30W-enough-no-matter-how-you-get-there/m-p/54429#M8171 I believe the 30W adapter described there by me with pictures is the one here: https://meraki.cisco.com/products/wireless/power#mr-ac-adapter But for some reason it does not supply 802.3at on many of my devices. From that spec doc, it says "Compatible With All indoor APs (except MR30H*) * For the MR30H: 802.3at required to provide PoE out on LAN 1 port" and it also says "The Meraki 12V AC Adapter is compatible with the Meraki MR18, MR32, MR34, MR42, and Z1. Four different plug types ensure compatibility with AC outlets in nearly every country around the globe." There are many more indoor units than those 5. Can you offer some clarification?

You get to be wirelessly connected to one of them. Whichever one you choose has a wired connection to the switch so gateway not repeater. Which do you choose?

That makes sense. This one is considerably lighter and chintzier feeling than the other one I’m now using. Check out this sample. The MathWorks but this wouldn’t even give POE+ to a MR 30 H.
