MX84 1-Year License Expired in Co-Term Org with Other MX & MR Licenses – Renewal Required?

Hi Community,

I need a clarification on Meraki Co-Termination licensing behavior. Customer details are anonymized.

Environment details:

Licensing model: Co-Termination

Devices in the org:

MX84 – Advanced Security

MX85 – Advanced Security

Multiple MR access points

License details:

MX84 Advanced Security – 1 year

Claimed on 04-Feb-2025

MX85 Advanced Security – 3 years

MR Enterprise licenses for all APs

Organization license status: OK

Single co-term expiry date is in the future (2027)

Situation: A distributor is advising that the MX84 license must be renewed now, since its original 1-year term (claimed Feb-2025) has completed.

However, my understanding is:

In a co-termination organization, Meraki enforces licensing at the organization level, not per device

Once licenses are claimed and merged, individual license expiration dates are no longer tracked

As long as:

The organization license is valid, and

At least one MX license family exists in the org

→ All MX devices follow the organization co-term expiry date

Questions for confirmation:

Is it mandatory to renew the MX84 license now, or will it remain licensed until the organization co-term expiry?

Does the presence of other MX licenses (MX85) satisfy the MX license family requirement for the MX84?

Do MR licenses have any impact on MX licensing compliance (my understanding is no)?

Looking for confirmation from Meraki team members or community experts.

Thanks in advance.

The distributor is wrong.  No licences need to be renewed until your co-term expiry date is reached.

The MX84 goes EOS 31st October 2026.  I wonder if they got confused by this.

I'd probably sit tight till the 2027 expiry, and replace the MX84 and get new licences all in one go.

You're correct and the distributor is wrong.

Co-Term means exactly that - all licenses added to the organisation will expire together.

So, all devices in your organisation will remain licensed until the co-term expiry.

If you add licenses for new devices, your expiry will be pushed further back.

When you approach your co-term expiry date, you can purchase a renewal of licenses for the existing devices.

@Brash @PhilipDAth so we need to simply wait till the MX84 end of support date and procure the replacement for that prior that date?

That's the suggestion yes.

  • Replace the MX84 before its End of Support date (Oct 31st 2026)
  • Renew all of your licenses at your co-termed end date (2027)

Depending on when in 2027 your licenses expire, you could potentially look at bundling both of the above actions into one.
