Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

If you are a Cisco Meraki MSP please Kudo's this post so we can force it to the top of the list so it gets attention.

When you go into the MSP Portal you get a nice static view of all your clients.  And that is the problem, it is static.

I want to be able to put the status of all clients we look after onto a big monitor.  If something goes wrong I want the display to dynamically update to show me something is broken.

I can't really use the graphical map anymore because the whole of our country is covered in Meraki devices we look after.  So I need this data in a table form.

You can go into Network and select to only statically display networks that are offline or alerting.  I need this table to be on my primary monitoring screen and to dynamically update as networks have devices going offline or alerting.  I need to be able to see only networks currently that have an issue.

Sure I could use the "Make a wish" option, but I have made many many wishes over time and not really had a result.  So time to try a new approach - the community forum.

THIS!!

MSP owner here, and we need this desperately as well. Would also be helpful if Cisco Meraki offered better documentation, and examples, of SNMP configurations for use in modern RMM solutions (actually thinking of starting another thread for users to post useful SNMP OIDs, tips, tricks, etc).

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

Great point made and I do somewhat agree this is a draw back for MSP's which have large Meraki deployments. You could alternatively look at building your own by using the dashboard API or even just using SNMP to the devices?- https://documentation.meraki.com/zGeneral_Administration/Monitoring_and_Reporting/SNMP_Overview_and_...

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

Is the menu option Organization > (Monitor) Overview not enough?

Personally I feel the dashboard is not great in reporting.

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

That only lets you monitor one Organisation.  Service providers need to be able to monitor all of their clients.

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

I understand now.

We also would find this really useful, alongside the ability to create MSP logins.

Thank you,

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

Make sure you Kudo's the original post then.  :-)

We use a generic login on the MSP side (with two factor turned on) across all of our clients.  There is no easy way to add a login to all of the clients at once.

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

Agree that a dynamic MSP dashboard would be a great addition - we're using SNMP monitoring via a separate NMS already, but the dashboard would be handy for a NOC wallboard.

Also the ability to add accounts across multiple organisations would be ideal, remove the need to do it manually or use shared accounts.

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

I agree - we ended up using API to build our own high-level monitoring dashboard that is dynamic... but we shouldn’t have had to! Get this in the DB!

@AlexJ I to encourage you to share your dashboard with the community. If you publish it to GitHub I'll put it on the website for all to see.

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

I gave Kudos to the original post as I do see value in this offering.

Perhaps the solution to this would be via the API.  For us what we are doing for a work around is using PRTG pointed at snmp.meraki.com.  This has allowed is to creat a dashboard in our NOC for real time monitoring.  This does take a bit to setup in terms of setting up PRTG, importing MIBs, and going through all of the sensor data that get pulled.

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

I've played with two approaches.  Using SNMP with PRTG (like you) and with using a custom XML sensor and calling the API directly.

Both approaches are painful.

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

While stuck in traffic driving to the Cisco partner appreciation event this afternoon I suddenly hit me how to make the MSP dashboard dynamic.

Basically create an html file on your machine using notepad based with the content below.  You could call it "monitoring.html" for example.  Now go to the current static MSP dashboard.  Getting it looking how you like (filters, etc) and then copy the URL into the url variable below.  Save the file.

Then simply double click it.  You'll probably get a warning about it trying to open up a pop-up window.  Tell your browser to allow this permanently.

It works by opening up the Meraki dashboard to the URL you have given.  Then every 60s it closes that window and opens it again.  I know, a bit of a hack but it works.  But at least it means we can have a "heads up" display and dynamically see customers with devices that have an issue.

<!DOCTYPE html>
<html lang="en">
<head>
</head>

<body>

<script type="text/javascript">

var url="https://n85.meraki.com/xxx/msp_portal#t=network&q=(status%253A%2522alerting%2522%2520OR%2520status%2...)";
var merakiWindow=window.open(url);

setInterval(function() { merakiWindow.close();merakiWindow=window.open(url); }, 60000);

</script>

</body>

</html>

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

Interesting solution to the problem. What about Meraki enabling SNMP traps from the devices to a real NMS?

Kind of a big deal

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

@Stealth_Network I don't even care about SNMP traps, if we could just get simpler SNMP polling working better - so that an NMS can easily scan and monitor the devices.  Alas mandatory OIDs do not get presented, making SNMP really hard to use.

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

We are using Solarwinds right now and it gives good basic monitoring right out of the box, (along with it's Netflow collection) is there something specific you are looking for?

Kind of a big deal

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

Yes.  I want to be able to point an NMS at a Meraki device and have it automatically detected all of the interfaces.

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

Solarwinds does

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

LogicMonitor does this now too.  I've used LogicMonitor to build a dashboard for Meraki devices across all our clients.  LM has a pre-built template for Meraki that pulls in all the interfaces automagically!

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

They don't show any pricing on their web site.  What do they charge?

Re: Need Dynamic MSP Dashboard Monitoring

They charge by volume, but I believe starts around $10 per monitored device.  Their support is great and the product is EXTREMELY full featured.  I don't work for them, just a pleased customer.
